The College Football Doomsday Scenario

Listed in:

When Ohio State lost to Illinois this past weekend, it effectively killed their national title hopes, as the Buckeyes will now have to win out and get a lot of help from the teams ahead of them in order to rise to the top of the BCS rankings. Should tOSU make the championship game, though, I think television executives and football fans around the country would consider it good fortune. The Buckeyes’ history might rightly be called “storied”, and they have a fan base to match.

Right now, I imagine the TV people are happy with how things have shaken out. LSU is set to play for the championship, and they, too, have a long history of success. Even though Oregon has never played on that stage before, they have also been a very good team for many years, now, to the point that it’s probably fair to call them a national program. Everything’s fine… for now. However, I want to figure out college football’s Doomsday Scenario.

Basically, the Doomsday Scenario is what would give every arrogant big-conference booster an aneurysm, and simultaneously cause television executives to plan on taking a golden parachute sooner rather than later.

Here’s what would have to happen to destroy college football for everyone, broken down by conference:

Michigan romps over Ohio State.

Tennessee wins out. Georgia loses to Kentucky. Florida loses to Florida State. LSU loses at home to Arkansas, and then loses to Tennessee in the SEC championship game.

Oregon loses to Arizona and Oregon State. Arizona State loses to USC, which then turns around and loses to UCLA.

Kansas loses to Iowa State and Missouri. Oklahoma loses to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. Texas wins out the regular season, and then loses to Missouri in the Big XII title game.

West Virginia loses to Cincinnati and then Pittsburgh.

Virginia Tech loses big to Miami (FL), and then wins a close one over Virginia. Clemson beats Boston College, and then loses to South Carolina.

Hawaii loses big to Boise State. Boise State wins out.

If this all comes to pass, with Ohio State dropping precipitously in the polls, and both Michigan and Tennessee failing to leapfrog anyone, the BCS national title game would be…

Missouri versus Boise State.

Doom! Doom! Doom! Doom! Doom! Who's rooting for Doom?!
